On the 27th and 28th of April 2017, ICMPD in Armenia conducted a media trip to the Lori region, the first in a series of such trips to be organised by ICMPD in Armenia this year within the MIBMA project framework.
10 journalists representing the Public Radio of Armenia, www.panorama.am, Aravot Daily, H3 TV, www.newsbook.am, www.Chai-Khana.org, www.lragir.am, www.aysor.am and others visited Vanadzor city and 5 villages - Darbas, Gugark, Margahovit, Shahumyan and Arjut. The journalists met with region governor, village elders, and the local population.
Earlier this year, the Prime Minister of Armenia announced that the objective of the RA Government is to change the management approach to three-stage local public administration system - communities, municipalities and government cooperation. The Prime Minister tasked the heads of communities and village elders to present investment and development projects aimed at offering solutions to community problems, increase of incomes, creation of workplaces and attraction of investments, which can enhance the economic development of communities.
The journalists met with Mr. Artur Nalbandyan, Lori region governor, who briefly presented the situation of region and discussed the new focus on business development, following the Prime Minister assignment. The main topics of the interviews with the village elders were their views on investment and development projects on a 5-year perspective, general living conditions of villagers, the level of labour migration, and the opportunities for workplaces creation in the villages.
This trip laid the foundations of a more nuanced and comprehensive way of reporting on migration and development issues in Armenia.
