On 28 September, ICMPD organised a workshop on the European fingerprint system for asylum seekers and irregular migrants (EURODAC). The aim of the workshop was to introduce EURODAC to representatives of the Migration Service, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Police and the National Security Service.
The workshop was conducted by Mr. Peter Hanel, an Austrian expert who held senior positions within Austrian and German Ministry of Interior and EU Commission. He was one of the experts at the forefront of the development of the EURODAC system.
Mr. Hanel gave a comprehensive overview on EURODAC history, regulation, and functionalities. The linkages between EURODAC and other EU biometric identification systems, aimed at identifying (irregular) migrants and asylum seekers were also presented. The participants gained understanding of the possibilities for information exchange between Armenian migrant fingerprint system and EU institutions. The discussion focused on the possibility and feasibility of introducing a fingerprint database for asylum seekers and irregular migrants in Armenia.
